National Guard Down

I find this terrifying. As described on ThinkProgress: "A new report by the Commission of the National Guard and Reserves "determined that 88 percent" of National Guard units are not prepared for a catastrophic attack on the country. The 400-page report "concludes that the nation 'does not have sufficient trained, ready forces available' to respond to a chemical, biological or nuclear weapons incident, 'an appalling gap that places the nation and its citizens at greater risk.'"

Many of us out in "fly-over" America are in agreement with the unease you express in your post. Our National Guard is made up of plain folks who keep in training and readiness every fourth weekend, with two weeks of active duty each year. This is so they can be called up any time there's a natural disaster, requiring extraordinary heavy work and dangerous rescues to be performed.

One political party has consistently cut funding for Defense, insulted and denigrated the military, compared U.S. active duty personnel to NAZI stormtroopers, prematurely pronounced accused enlisted soldiers as murderers, et cetera.

That same party has now announced plans to slash military programs even more drastically, at a time we find we can't even face down the patheticker pirates who have been attacking international shipping off the horn of Africa for more than a decade.

We have elected a bunch of sorry rascals.
